Donor/Patient Stories

February 14, 2007

Dear Dr. Antolak:

I have been wanting to send you a note for quite a while and I finally got down to it. My name is Terry Baranczyk. I am not sure if you remember me, because it does go back to 2000 when I was a patient of yours at the Mayo. I was the one who had the pudental nerve surgery in France and your son came over and sat in and video taped the surgery in July 2000.

I just wanted to let you know how grateful I am that after seeing at least six other doctors, you were the one who actually knew what was causing all the pain and you recommended going to France and having Dr. Robert do the surgery.

It took me almost five years after the surgery before I could get rid of the inflatable ring to sit on. Because I felt the healing was not progressing properly after almost two years, I did call the other doctor who had gone to France with you just before I did to see how he was doing. I will never forget the most important thing he asked me and that was "if I was under stress". At that time I had three major stress related things in my life and after I made a change in one, it was about 20 days later I could start sitting for short time periods on the ring. This continued getting better when I got rid of the other two stress related items in my life. I feel stress had a lot to do with my slow recovery. But I still could not sit without the ring. Then it was suggested I start taking Vitamin B-12. I could not believe it. But within six weeks after starting this routine I did not need the ring as much and seven months later I was totally pain free.

It is amazing after almost six and half years of not being able to sit like a normal person, I can finally enjoy sitting at restaurants, movies, and even car trips. There are a few things I am still afraid to do and this is ride a bike or snowmobile or ATV sitting down. It might be more psychological because I do not want to go back where I was in 2000.

So I am not sure if you have many success stories to share with patients, but feel free to share mine. And again, thanks a million for helping me out.

Sincerely,

Terry Baranczyk

Last night I played hockey for two hours. I roller blade, downhill ski, snowshoe, to name a few. Just bike riding still scared me-which maybe psychological.

Terry

Dear Doctor:

I thought you might be interested in my "miracle shot." (Pain controlled after a single injection)

After I talked to you, I tried to cut my medicine to two pills a day, but I soon got "feelings" that is was coming back. I went back to the three pills per day, and have not had "feelings" since.

But I expect the bubble to burst any day. Maybe not-who knows. For now, I am enjoying every day.

Sincerely,

Evelyn Eller

Coaching Improved My Life

One day, overnight, my life changed. I woke up on the morning of the last day of my vacation, and found I couldn't sit without pain and had muscle spasms in my lower back.

Over the next year, despite the best efforts of my physical therapists, the pain increased and was a constant companion. As a result, I was no longer able to practice my profession or participate in sports. My finance and relationships were in trouble. As I focused on my pain and my losses, I was understandably depressed.

Several years later I found Dr. Antolak and diagnosis and treatment for my physical pain.

And, fortunately, he referred me to Jennie Antolak for coaching. Coaching helped me deal with my emotional pain. Almost immediately I went from a focus on my losses to a focus on what I wanted out of my life-what I valued, what was already a positive and what I needed. I looked at the possibilities open to me.

Now, almost 6 months later, I still refer back to my "map" of what I want from my life, as a reminder.

Although I continue to deal with pain and limitations, I am optimistic and content thanks to the coaching work that I did.
